Testing for Asymmetry in the Measured and Underground Business Cycles in New Zealand *

چکیده

In this paper we consider the cyclical component of the underground economy in New Zealand, and compare some its characteristics with those of the corresponding cycle in real measured GDP. Comparisons are made between the turning points of the two cycles, and formal tests for cyclical asymmetry (in terms of both "steepness" and "deepness") are conducted. The turning-point comparisons reinforce earlier results of Giles (1996a) on the causal linkages between the measured and underground economies. We find that there is no evidence of asymmetry in the cycles for either measured or underground output. Author Contact: Professor David E. A. Business cycles in Iran: Evidence from asymmetry and correlated shocks

In this Paper, business cycle asymmetry in Iran has been investigated using a nonlinear unobserved component model. In this regard, according to Kim and Nelsonchr('39')s (1999) interpretation of Friedman plucking model (1993), asymmetric transitory component has been modeled and simultaneously the possibility of a correlation between transitory and permanent shocks has also been considered. The...

Asymmetric Effects of Monetary Policy and Business Cycles in Iran using Markov-switching Models

This paper investigates the asymmetric effects of monetary policy on economic growth over business cycles in Iran. Estimating the models using the Hamilton (1989) Markov-switching model and by employing the data for 1960-2012, the results well identify two regimes characterized as expansion and recession. Moreover, the results show that an expansionary monetary policy has a positive and statist...

Development of a new creep testing equipment to obtain long-term deformation parameters of salt rocks

Creep phenomenon in rock engineering plays a key role in development of underground spaces as they must be stable enough for a long period of time. Current research involved designing and manufacturing of a new creep testing machine. The equipment is capable to perform simultaneous light-duty creep tests on more than one cylindrical rock samples at a very low cost.To evaluate the equipment’s pe...

Causality Between the Measured and Underground Economies in New Zealand

We investigate some characteristics of the underground economy in New Zealand by testing for Granger causality between measured and "hidden" real GDP in that country. We find clear evidence of causality from measured to hidden economic activity, but only weak evidence of causality in the reverse direction. This poses a dilemma for policy-makers who wish to stimulate economic growth and also min...

Stock Market Bubbles and Business Cycles: A DSGE Model for the Iranian Economy

T his paper investigates the movement between stock market bubbles and fluctuations in aggregate variables within a DSGE model for the Iranian economy. We apply a new Keynesian monetary framework with nominal rigidity in wages and prices based on the study by Ikeda (2013), which is developed with appropriate framework for the Iranian economy. We consider central bank behavior differe...
